Cultural identities in mental health - Hana Bahnas

Significance of cultural identity

  • Ones cultural identity refers to a particular heritage or religious/spiritual which holds significance to ones identity.

  • Adjusting to a new unfamiliar environment can be difficult as certain traditions or methods of lifestyle may not be present in that area.

  • Especially for youth immigrating to the United States, maintaining cultural identity may be difficult.

Bi-cultural stress

  • Often, many youth tend to let go of their cultural background to fit into the “American” lifestyle and identity.

  • In addition, individuals may disregard their cultural identity after experiencing harmful stereotypes and discrimination from others due to their background.

  • Repeatedly experiencing hateful actions from others heavily impacts ones mental health, which may lead to depression and anxiety.

  • As a result, one may resent their cultural identity and abandon it.

Maintaining cultural identity

  • However, the cultural background one grows up with not only represents their heritage and identity, but expresses milestones and memories with loved ones and yourself.

  • As a result, joining cultural/religious clubs that align with the given cultural identity may nourish a sense of community in ones new environment.

  • Maintaining cultural pride nourishes ones mental health and may help others get over their fear of expressing their cultural identity.
